Clouds Project
For the China Changing Festival at the Southbank, the award-winning director Tim Yip commissioned 25 costumes for a show exploring themes of identity, migration and environment, from the point of view of London’s young citizens. The show included a movie made with 25 teenagers and models for the catwalk.
The design process had been initiated by Yip, giving the London designers conceptual ‘stories’ of global concerns to be interpreted into costumes.
These ‘stories’ ranged from ‘Ocean’ which was a straightforward awareness of plastic pollution, to the more cerebral ‘Traveller,’ which represented the nomadic lifestyle of the inhabitants of a future world with depleted resources. These ‘stories’ were organised into the four categories of ‘Natural Environment’; ‘Man-made Environment’; ‘History’;’ Identities’ and ‘Reformation’.
My costume was an interpretation of the word armour and history, I based my costume on the poem, Le Dormeur du Val, by Arthur Rimbaud and the image of a dead soldier from the last century waking up from the past with his outfit which took shape from nature, he once laid on.
The coat is made out of human hair and a recycled military coat, covered with treated autumn leaves, the helmet is made out of felt and with camouflage made out of real tree bark.
